| Lake Michigan dominates southwest Michigan's weather.
What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" brings
locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the
southwest receiving much less snow than areas further north.
Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lake chills
the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere.
The Lake also helps modify summer high temperatures, making
the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Autumn
is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor
attractions. Although the Upper Peninsula is cooler, the temperature
ranges in the far northern and far southern cities do not differ
excessively Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado
belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the
